Re: PS3 not detecting any discs.
didnt read everything but enjoy
Most of the time, this problem is lens/diode failure. Most of the time, it will stop working with absolutely no warning. These things go out like a light bulb. It either works or it doesn't. Sony will want $150 to fix it, or $175 to replace it if your warranty is expired, which is pretty ridiculous. I would advise against paying Sony to fix it when you can do it yourself for about $50-$55.
The part you need to replace is model number KES-400A, or KEM-400A. They are essentially the same component, but each are only compatible with specific models of the PS3 (for example, my 60GB PS3 requires the KES-400A). You can get these on ebay for around $50-$55. Now just hit up youtube and watch one of the many videos that show how to disassemble your PS3 and replace the laser. It's really quite easy, and you don't need any particular expertise to do it. You will however, need a couple of specific tools. A star head screw driver (remove the security tab on your PS3 and you'll see it.), a small computer (or eye glasses) phillips head screwdriver, and a standard phillips head screwdriver.
Since I have done this, Ill offer a few tidbits of advice.
1) Make sure there is NO DISC inside your ps3 when you take it apart, or you'll have to reassemble it, eject the disc, and start all over.
2) You want the small screwdriver to have a magnetic head. Trust me, you'll thank me for that bit of advice when you are putting your PS3 back together. Those screws are tiny!
3) Use caution when removing the disc drive. It is connected to the rest of the unit by small, thing, wires. You do not want to break those.
4) It can be difficult to tell in these videos, but the ribbon wires they are removing are held in place by small black tabs that flip up to release the ribbons. Just flip them up and the ribbons will slide right out.
These two videos do a pretty good job of explaining it, but there are a slew of others. Best of luck, and don't give Sony your hard earned money to fix their faulty hardware!
